Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
Luke 12:22-23 NIV
A few verses earlier, Jesus warns us to beware of all kinds of arrogance, because “a man’s life does not consist in the quantity of his possessions”.
And now he teaches us that we shouldn’t worry about what to eat or what to wear, because life is more important than these things.
I think Jesus was talking about the priorities we place in our lives.
Do we do what we do to increase our amount of possessions? To have more possessions? Do we do what we do because we worry that we won’t have enough to wear or eat?
Jesus teaches us that we shouldn’t live like this worrying or anxiously searching for these things, because that’s the way the world lives.
And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
Luke 12:29 NIV
God knows that these are things we need, but they shouldn’t be the focus of how we live our lives.
He teaches that if we seek first the Kingdom of God and those things (clothes and food, which the rest of the world worries about or anxiously seeks) will be given to us.
Worries and anxious searches for possessions never lead us to a place of satisfaction.
But by seeking God’s Kingdom first in our lives, we will be satisfied with God’s provisions, because our focus in life is in the right place.
Heavily Father, as I live my life today, may I remember that life is more than food and clothes. That I must seek always your kingdom and all these needs in life you will provide and I will be satisfied in you. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
