Scripture
“A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked.”
Psalms 84:10 NLT
Observation
While I was reading this Psalms, and especially while reading this verse, the famous (but maybe already old) song came to mind: Better is One Day.
It gave me a nostalgic feeling when I used to sing this song at youth camps, youth services, with all the passion in my heart, and really meaning it. In Portuguese, the chorus would say:
“É melhor um dia em Teu altar. É melhor um dia te adorar. É melhor um dia em Teu altar, que mil em outro lugar”
The Psalmist express his passion for being in God’s presence by saying that he would rather be one day into God’s presence than spend 1000x time more in any another place.
Application
Does my hearts feel the same way as the Psalmist?
If so, how much of my time am I spending in God’s presence?
Would I say “I rather be here in God’s presence than do anything else”?
Of course, there are jobs, tasks, studies, and family that fill up our time, but what is my heart’s feeling when I talked about spending time in God’s presence?
Prayer
Father, better is to be a single day in your presence, seeking you with all my heart than to spend time elsewhere. Those times that I spend with you cannot be compared to anything else in this entire world. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
