Setting Our Hearts

Scripture

“These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.”

1 Corinthians 10:11 NIV

Observation

The Old Testament gives us a lot of examples on the sinful attitudes of the human heart, and that we must watch out.

From the verse 7 to 10 it teaches a few examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as the Israelites did in the past:

  1. Do not be idolaters.
  2. We should not commit sexual immorality.
  3. We should not test Christ.
  4. Do not complain.

Application

From a lot of the bad stuff that God’s chosen people did in the old testament, complaining comes in the top 4, being one of the few that is mentioned in this chapter.

My daughter is 5 years old now. As most of kids on this age, she does not like to have a “no” as for an answer, even thou we explain her why. And when she does not get what she wants, she complains. Yesterday it was one of these days. After all the arguments and cry, I talked to her about the attitude she was having: no gratitude, only complaint.

How many times, we don’t see the work God is doing, and the things he is teaching us along the way, but we only have a childish attitude of complaining: “I don’t get what I want, so I will not obey You”. And when this is set into our heart, we are in extremely danger.

Prayer

Gracious Father in Heaven, thank you for this Friday. Thank you for all the things you given me. Help me to see your work and your blessings in my life, and have the attitude of gratitude. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
