Clear Conscience

Scripture:

‘Because of this, I always try to maintain a clear conscience before God and all people.’

Acts of the Apostles 24:16

Observation:

Paul did things that he would not regret later. He would not let his actions compromise his faith and his conscience before God and man. We all have alarm systems in us that signal to us when we are about to violate our faith and what we believe. This signal helps us to live a life of integrity. Paul had no reason to worry about what he was accused of because of his commitment to a life with a clear conscience. He could sleep knowing what he does throughout the day is without question. That he doesn’t have to build up lies to cover up, or get defensive when questioned. How can we lead a life where we maintain a clear conscience before God and all people?

Application:

1) We need to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit.

When the Holy Spirit nudges us, how do we respond? Sometimes we press the “spiritual snooze-button” and go ahead with something, only to regret it later. We are blessed with the feature to fast-forward the movie to see where what we are about to do, will lead us. There are times we need to act by just running. Joseph did it and we can too. 2 Timothy 2:22 reads, “Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. When we sense the Holy Spirit telling us to do something, we need to respond not by pressing the snooze button, but obey and run if need be.

2) When “yes” or “no” don’t work, choose to be wise.

Proverbs 4:6-7 read, “Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” We must choose what will be the wise thing to do. By seeking wisdom, we will be protected and be able to stand up to the façade of temptation. We need to ask ourselves, “If I do this, would it be a wise thing to do.” Seek wisdom and she will protect you!

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for your words to me today. I know I have my share of regrets and soiled my conscience because I chose to not run or follow the leading of wisdom from the Holy Spirit. Please help me to be more sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading and also grant me the heart to run when I need to. Grant me the wisdom I may need and please forgive me when I have chosen not to follow you. Please help us lead lives of integrity before You and people. I love you and thank you for your grace. In Your Name, Jesus. Amen
