You Are What You Think

Scripture:

“Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.”

Romans 8:5 NLT

Observation :

Paul urges us to consider our thought life. What we think about leads us to actions that fulfill that thinking. Proverbs 23:7 reads, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…” If we were to consider what our actions are leading us to, it always starts off where our mind is. It is impossible to think of two things at the same time, so we need to choose to think about the thing that pleases the Holy Spirit.

Application:

Martin Luther once said, “You can’t stop birds from flying over your head but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair.” the devil will throw thoughts into your mind to tempt you to act upon them, but we have the choice to not dwell or act upon them. Make sure to test the thoughts that come through our mind to see if they honor God. Some thoughts are questionable and require us to consider them wisely. Drinking alcohol may not be bad or against God, but if it hinders a brother or sister in Christ, we should not choose to act on it.

As I am writing this I had a notification from YouTube from a channel I subscribe to. It dropped down from the top of my screen. Without thinking about it, I touched it and it opened up to the video. It was nothing bad, but it was a distraction from doing my devotions. Just like our thoughts we need to be selective and discern which thoughts to allow into our consciousness to move us to action. We need to choose the thoughts that please the Spirit.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much for your patience and mercy. I know there are times I have let thoughts that should not have pass the gates of my mind and eventually led to action. I ask for your forgiveness and ask for your cleansing of my thought life. I also pray that you guide us with the power of the Holy Spirit to choose thoughts that will honor you and lead us to actions that pleases you and helps us to love others. Thank you so much for your Holy Spirit and for the light, wisdom, and guidance the Spirit brings. I love you and ask of this in Your Name, Jesus.
