Scripture:
Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.” ‘ Luke 18:24-25,29-30, ESV
Observation:
Jesus paints an image of the extreme difficulty it is to try to enter the Kingdom of God. Having an attachment to the things of the world can restrict us by throwing us off the narrow path. Likewise, if our grip on the things of this world is so intense that separation would be excruciating, we are not fit to enter. Jesus is saying to throw off the burdens and bondage that the things of this world place on us.
These are the very things that distract us from following the life that God has for us. Jesus was not saying that riches were bad, but rather it is the attachment to these things that makes entering the kingdom of God, difficult.
Application:
I had to ask the question that Jesus posed to the rich man to myself. I know I would have difficulty as well. I know it may be easier to follow the commandments that Jesus asked the rich man about than to give up things. So this morning, I had to ask myself about the attachment I have to things. Would I choose these things over following Christ? Jesus may never ask me to give up my possessions, but I know He is asking me to keep my heart and soul free from the bonds of money.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your word to me this morning. Thank you for reminding me of the life you have called me to live. Help me to use the things you have blessed me with to serve You and others. Please help us to remember what has true value and what our mission is. We love You and ask of this in Your Name, Jesus. Amen!

観察してみましょう。
イエス様は、神の国に入ろうとすることが極めて困難であることをイメージして描かれています。この世のものに執着していると、狭い道から外れてしまい、私たちを制限してしまいます。同様に、この世のものへの執着が強すぎて、分離することが耐え難いようであれば、私たちは入るのに適していません。イエスは、この世のものが私たちに負わせる重荷や束縛を捨てなさいと言っているのです。
これらは、神が私たちのために用意された人生に従うことから私たちを遠ざけるものなのです。イエスは、富が悪いと言っているのではありません。むしろ、これらのものに執着することが、神の国に入ることを難しくしているのです。
応用編
イエス様が金持ちの男に投げかけた質問を、私は自分自身に投げかけなければなりませんでした。私も同じように難しいと思っています。イエスが金持ちの男に問うた戒めに従うことは、物事を諦めることよりも簡単なことかもしれないことを私は知っています。ですから、今朝は、自分が持っている物への執着について自問自答する必要がありました。私は、キリストに従うことよりも、これらのものを選ぶだろうか？イエスは私に財産を手放せとは言わないかもしれませんが、私の心と魂をお金の束縛から解放するように求めておられることは知っています。
