Scripture: “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.” – Matthew 5:13
Observation: In this verse, Jesus uses the metaphor of salt to describe the essential and influential role that we as his followers have in the world. Salt in the ancient world was valuable, not only as a seasoning but also as a preservative. To lose its flavor meant it was no longer useful for its intended purpose.
Application: We add value and preserve goodness by reflecting God’s love and faithfulness to those around us. Just as salt enhances the flavor of food, our lives should enhance the world with kindness, compassion, and grace. This verse serves as well as challenge: we must guard against losing our God-given purpose. When we compromise our values to satisfy selfish desires, we risk becoming tasteless, ineffective, and ultimately discarded. It`s important to remember that the “you” is plural. We can be Salt only as a community of believers. We need the encouragement and help of each other in order to be able to fulfil Jesus`s calling.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for calling us to be the salt of the earth. Help us to stay connected with you and not to lose sight of the calling and mission you have given us. Forgive us when we lose the right focus and attitude for people around us. Fill us yet again with your vision, power and love. Amen.
