Scripture:
‘And the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” ‘
Judges 6:14 ESV
Observation:
Does what you say of yourself match that of God? The Lord tells Gideon to “go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” This was totally not what Gideon expected or thought of himself. Gideon goes on to explain his self-image to the Lord, who just called him a man of might, the one to save Israel from the hand of the Midianites.
The Lord is tells us how He sees us, maybe not at the moment, but in the potential that we have. He speaks to us from the image He has of us and not from how we view ourselves. I know that I tend to view myself as a culmination of the mistakes of my past, the experiences, and often the weaknesses I see in myself. I know that my self-image is not positive but rather one of weakness. That said, it is not a healthy way to view myself. God spoke to me to seek, get to know, and trust in what He says about me. It definitely isn’t one of condemnation or criticism but one of promise, power, and love.
Application:
God lists several things in the Bible explaining who we are to Him. We are to seek them out, know them, and believe and trust in what He says. It is not an instant thing because each of us has a past that has told us differently for as long as we can remember. This holds us back from believing. But like continuing to pour clean water into a glass of dirty water, eventually, the water will run clean. So today, let us keep pouring the Word of God into our lives and let the truth of God replace the negative thoughts and unbelief we have about ourselves. This is called sanctification. As we grow closer to Jesus, we will become more like Him.
Prayer:
Dear God Almighty, when you spoke to Gideon about being someone he didn’t think he was, I felt that you were talking about me as well. I know I often have negative and unhealthy views of myself that really don’t fit what you say and think about me. I pray that you constantly speak into my life and affirm Your views of me, of us, in your truth. Help us to stop thinking of ourselves as people of mistakes but as people of your promise. Thank you, Jesus, for calling us to become all that we were created to be in You. Thank you for your grace that covers our past failures and allows us to live a life being renewed in You. We love you, and thank you for saving us from who we used to be. In Your Name, Jesus. Amen.
