Ears Open and Mouth Closed

‘ As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut. It is evil to make mindless offerings to God. Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few. ‘

Ecclesiastes 5:1-2 NLT

As I read these verses, I was reminded of we should approach God. Yes, He is our Heavenly Father and we can come before Him in every and any situation because of what Jesus Christ has done for us on the cross. Yet as King Solomon says, we need to keep our ears open and mouths shut. Perhaps I am the only one, but I sometimes come before God irreverently and even in a nonchalant manner. I may say prayers that are half-hearted and lack the respect that God deserves. God knows our hearts and prayers before we even ask, so we ought to keep our hearts in check. Are we being reverent and surrendered? Is our mind somewhere else instead of being present with God? I know it irritates me when someone calls for me and talks to me when they are distracted and not fully present. I know God is so much more patient than I am, but I need to be more respectful and surrendered to God when I approach the house of God.

What came to mind after reading these verses is that I need first to quiet my heart and surrender myself before God. Kneel if I must, but take a moment to quiet my heart and thoughts before Him. Often I say what I need from God and close it with an “Amen” and done. Rather, my ears need to be open to the Holy Spirit speaking to me. Prayer is communication with God and that means it is a two-way activity. I need to let God speak into my heart and really listen to Him.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come before You and ask for Your forgiveness for the times I have spoken too much and listened too little. Thank you for your words to me today. I choose to make my words few and show you the proper respect. I love you and ask of this in Your Name, Jesus Christ. Amen!

‘ 神の家に入るときは、耳を開き、口を閉じていなさい。神に対して心ない供え物をするのは悪である。軽率な約束をしてはならないし、神の前に問題を持ち出すことを急いではならない。神様は天におられ、あなたはこの地上におられるのですから。だから、あなたの言葉は少なくしてください。’
