Scripture:
‘When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ” ‘ John 5:6-9,11 NIV
Observation:
This man had been waiting but the pool was in his condition for about 38 years. We do not know how long he had been waiting by the poolside to get in but when asked by Jesus to be healed, it is clear that this man had lost hope and given up. He gave an excuse why he couldn’t be healed. Yet, here we have Jesus presenting him with hope. Is there anything in my life that I had been hoping for and never seen come to pass such that I am unbelieving and almost bitter? This man only complained that no one helped him, am I affected in the same way, so that even when God offers a way out, I am skeptical and untrusting?
Application:
- Stay sensitive to God. There are times when we are left waiting for something to happen. We are waiting for God’s answer to our prayer. If we give up hope we may miss God’s answer, because we have stopped expecting Him to answer. His answer may come in a different way than we expect but it doesn’t mean He is not answering. Keep sensitive and expect God’s answer.
- Did just sit there if nothing is happening. We may receive an answer from God which is to “wait.” Do not keep still, be open to the opportunity to train or discipline yourself. God may have something bigger than we can handle at the moment and He is waiting for us to be ready to receive that blessing.
Prayer:
Dear God Almighty, thank you for your patience with us. Thank you that though we are not worthy of your blessings, through Jesus, we are made worthy. Like this man in lame man in this story, you bless even if we are not expecting it. It was not by his faith, but by your will that he was healed. Help us to keep our eyes focused on you and to remain hopeful. Help us to also be ready to receive the blessings that you have for us. Please also forgive me for the times I have been so stubborn and looking for your answer in the way I wanted to see it happen that I have missed your blessing. I love you and choose to look to you with the expectation that you hear my prayers, and you hear our prayers. Thank you for loving us and for caring for us. I ask of this in Your Name, Jesus! Amen!

観察です。
この人は待っていたのですが、プールは約38年間も彼の状態でした。彼がどれくらいプールサイドで入るのを待っていたかは分かりませんが、イエスに癒されるように頼まれたとき、この男が希望を失い、あきらめていたことは明らかです。彼は、自分が癒されない理由を言い訳にしたのです。しかし、ここでイエスは彼に希望を与えています。私の人生の中で、希望を持っていたのに実現しなかったことで、不信仰になり、苦しくなりそうなことはないだろうか。この人は「誰も助けてくれない」と嘆いていましたが、私も同じように、神が解決策を提示してくれても、疑心暗鬼になり、信じることができなくなっていないでしょうか？
応用編
神に対して敏感であり続けましょう。私たちは、何かが起こるのを待ち続けることがあります。それは、私たちの祈りに対する神の答えを待っているのです。もし私たちが希望を捨てると、神が答えてくださると期待することをやめてしまい、神の答えを見過ごすかもしれません。神の答えは、私たちの期待とは違った形で返ってくるかもしれませんが、それは、神が答えていないという意味ではありません。敏感になって、神の答えを期待し続けましょう。
何も起こらないなら、ただ座っているだけでいいのです。私たちは、神から “待ちなさい “という答えを受け取るかもしれません。じっとしていないで、自分を鍛え、訓練する機会に心を開いてください。神様は、私たちが今できることよりも大きなことをしていて、私たちがその祝福を受け取る準備ができているのを待っておられるのかもしれません。
祈りましょう。
全能の神様、私たちに忍耐強く接してくださることを感謝します。私たちはあなたの祝福にふさわしくありませんが、イエス様によって、私たちはふさわしい者とされたことを感謝します。この物語の中の足の不自由な男のように、私たちが期待していなくても、あなたは祝福してくださいます。彼が癒されたのは、彼の信仰によるのではなく、あなたの御心によるのです。私たちがあなたに目を向け、希望を持ち続けることができるように助けてください。また、あなたが私たちのために持っている祝福を受け取る準備ができているように助けてください。また、私が頑固で、自分の思うような方法であなたの答えを探し、あなたの祝福を逃してしまったことを赦してください。私はあなたを愛し、あなたが私の祈りを聞き、私たちの祈りを聞いてくださることを期待して、あなたを見つめることを選びます。私たちを愛し、私たちを気遣ってくださることを感謝します。イエス様、あなたの御名によってお願いします。アーメン！
