Don`t be afraid!

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.  Matthew 28:8-10

Observation

Today we read through the spectacular story of the resurrection of Jesus. The angel tells the ladies: “Don`t be afraid” (v. 5) and then “go and tell” (v. 7). Afterwards, Jesus himself appears to them and repeats what the angel had said “Don`t be afraid” and “go and tell”. Then, to underline that message yet once again, Jesus tells his disciples: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Application

Fear can so easily control us: The fear of Covid, or the fear to fail or the fear of not belonging. What kind of fear controls you? The resurrected Jesus is saying: “Don`t be afraid! All authority is given to me. I am with you”. These are not just nice sounding words. Jesus backs up these words with the love shown to us on the cross and with his resurrection. We are weak. We are struggling. But Jesus has won the battle for us! To Him has been given all authority. We don`t need to be afraid anymore! He is in control. During this Christmas season may we be able to again reach many people with this Good News!

Prayer

Jesus, thank you that you are the true kind of this world. Thank you that you are in control. Thank you that you have a good plan and that you will restore all things. Transform me with your love and let us share the story of your wonderful kingship with many more people so that our hearts and this world will overflow with joy: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. (Luke 2:10)
