Topic: Sabbath

“Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.”
— ‭‭Mark‬ ‭2:27‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Observation

Jesus is telling us the Sabbath was made to meet our needs. We were not designed to always be working or doing. Many challenges we suffer today is because people do not take time to rest. Jesus is warning us that the Sabbath is vital for our health and relationship with the Father. However, it is not just a rule to follow. When we think of rules we may feel that they are for our good but they can also feel restrictive. It would be like saying it is a rule that you have to take a break lest you suffer consequences or punishment. Especially in this society, we are all for productivity but are made to feel guilty for taking a timeout. When we are exhausted, we find we are not at our best.

Application:

I have thought that the Sabbath was just another one of those rules that Christians needed to follow. But I know when I am exhausted, several parts of my life suffer, especially my family life. I need to start scheduling a Sabbath break. Not as something just on my to-do list but out of a desire for the best in my life.

Prayer:

Jesus, thank you for releasing us from the idea that the Sabbath is just a rule to follow. Thank you for blessing us with a time to be restored and revived in relationships, our own personal health, and even more importantly, in our relationship with You. Thank you for loving us so much to take the heavy yoke of the world’s expectations off of us and replacing it with Your Grace and Mercy. Thank you! I love You and ask this all in Your Name, Jesus. Amen!
