Scripture:
21I went away full, and the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi, when the Lord has testified against me and the Almighty has brought calamity upon me?”Ruth 1:21 ESV
Observation:
We will have times when we feel like calamity has befallen us. We will cry out to God, “Why have you done this to me?! Don’t you see the tragedies I have suffered, and you have allowed them!” Naomi wanted her name to be changed from “pleasant or gentle” to Mara or “Bitter.” Yes, she had been dealt a hard blow with the loss of her husband and her two sons, and one can see why she would desire to be called bitter.
Yet, God is faithful. There is someone similar in the Bible, and he chose to bless the Lord still. Job 1:21 reads, “And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
God never guaranteed that we would live a totally happy life without challenges and trials when Jesus became our Lord and Savior. But He does offer us hope beyond what we see in the face of our current situation. He does have promises planned for us beyond what we can see immediately. What can we learn from Job in light of what Naomi was going through?
Application:
We can learn not to let our situation make us bitter toward God but better. Let us bless Him regardless of what we may be going through. He remains faithful! Even though we could read about what finally happened to Naomi and Job, they did not know what the future holds. We, too, must remain faithful. We will not know what God will do beyond our situation, so hold to Him even tighter and rest upon His promises, even when it looks bleak. He does hear our prayers and cries to Him. God’s message to me today is to stick close to Him and even closer when things get hard. Even when the world is pushing us toward cursing God and giving up, we must do the opposite and remain in Him.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much for your faithfulness! Thank you for your promises that I can have hope in. Thank you for being a Faithful God to us even when we were drowning in our faithlessness. Jesus, please forgive me when I have been so focused on the situation before me that I forgot to be faithful. I thank you for your mercy and patience with me. Please remind me that you are always with me through everything that I will face. In Your Name, Jesus. Amen.
