What is the value of money?

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’”

Hebrews 13:5 NIV

The author of Hebrews gives us some final exhortation, and it includes the love for money.

Money itself is not the problem. Sometimes we even feel is the solution for a lot of our issues. However, the problem lies in loving money, when our choices are based on the financial outcome.

Paul says in his letter to the young Timothy:

“For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

1 Timothy 6:7-10 NIV

If we don’t find contentment with what we have today, we will find ourselves seeking for money all the time. We will accept a new job because it offers more money. We will prioritize our time to be able to get richer, even if it costs the time with our families. We will hold on our precious possessions with the fear of loosing it. We will forget to share to others what we have.

When money is on our priorities, our lives becomes more selfish and less sacrificial. It is not about how much money you have but it is about what you are doing with that. Am I using my money to bless my family, to buy things for me, to save for my future or the future of my kids? Or am I using it to do all that and bless others as well?

“How much value do I give my money?” it is an interesting question.

Graceful Father, thank you that you never leave us nor forsake us. You care about us more than we could imagine. Help me to always be content and grateful for the things I have, because I believe that it comes from you. You are all I have, and my trust is in you. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
