Scripture
He instructed the messenger: “When you have finished giving the king this account of the battle, the king’s anger may flare up, and he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Didn’t you know they would shoot arrows from the wall?’”
2 Samuel 11:19-20 NIV
Observation
King David slept with the wife of a man called Uriah, while he was on the battlefield.
She got pregnant, so David tried to hide this by calling Uriah home, so Uriah would sleep with his wife, and David’s sin would be hidden.
But when Uriah came back at the request of the king, he did not go back to his house but slept at the entrance of the palace because he could not have the privilege while his friends were still in the battle.
So, David sent him back to the battle, asking Joab to position Uriah where certainly he would be killed.
Joab moved the troops where Uriah was into a disadvantageous position where no military would put them.
“If he asks you this, then say to him, ‘Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.’”
2 Samuel 11:21b NIV
I wonder how many men died that day with Uriah because David was trying to hide his sin.
When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.
2 Samuel 11:26-27 NIV
Application
David thought that his plan to cover up his transgression ended up fine:
- Uriah died as a battle hero among others.
- David took care of Bathsheba after her husband died in battle.
It was like that until God bring to light his sins through the prophet Nathan.
After that, David recognized his sins and asked forgiveness from God.
When we try to cover up sins, the consequences of it get bigger and bigger.
Instead, we need to recognize our transgressions against God’s values and seek forgiveness.
