Scripture
Jeremiah 2:5 (NIV): “This is what the Lord says: ‘What fault did your ancestors find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves.’”
Observation
The idea that “we become what we worship” is a profound biblical principle. It suggests that whatever we hold in the highest regard and devote our lives to shapes our character and destiny. This concept is vividly illustrated in Jeremiah 2:5. What we worship profoundly influences who we become. By worshiping idols—objects with no real power or value—the Israelites lost their sense of worth and purpose.
Application
It is so easy to forget how powerful the worship of God, who so deeply loves us that He sacrifices Himself for us, is. In that love is all the security and wisdom we need. Every day, I am challenged to stay in His love. It’s not our work, our mistakes, or what people say, how healthy we are, or what we own that defines us or gives us identity. It’s His love shown to us in Jesus that gives us our deep value.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for revealing your love to us in Jesus. Help me to keep your love at the center of my life today. Amen.
