The Power of Humility

Scripture: “In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.” – Luke 2:1 (ESV)

Observation: Caesar Augustus, the most powerful man on earth at the time, issued a decree that led to the fulfillment of God’s prophecy. Augustus believed he was in control, wielding his power to command a census of the entire Roman world. Yet, in a humble manger in Bethlehem, Jesus Christ, the true King, was born. Augustus’ power was rooted in authority and control, while Jesus’ power was rooted in humility and love. Today, Augustus’ statue stands in the Vatican Museum, a relic of history, while Jesus has more followers than ever, embodying the eternal power of love and humility.

Application: This passage reminds us that God can use the powerful for His purposes, but true power comes through humility and love. Augustus’ decree, meant to display his control, ultimately served God’s plan to bring the Savior into the world. In our lives, we may encounter those who seem to hold all the power, but we must remember that God’s purposes prevail. Jesus’ life teaches us that real power is not about dominance or control, but about serving others with love and humility. As we navigate our daily lives, let’s strive to embody the humility and love of Jesus, trusting that God is in control and His plans are perfect.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for the example of Jesus, who showed us that true power lies in humility and love. Help us to remember that You are in control, even when it seems like others hold all the power. Teach us to serve others with the same love and humility that Jesus demonstrated. Use us for Your purposes, and let our lives reflect Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
