‘That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” ‘

John 20:19,21 (NLT)

When Jesus appears to his mourning, confused, and nonetheless broken disciples, he greets them with the Jewish greeting of “shalom” or loosely translated as “Peace be with you.” However, the word Jesus uses has a deeper meaning of well-being and of wholeness. Jesus must have said this several times to His disciples. But in this time of brokenness and despair, Jesus’, “Shalom” to his disciples felt different. By His greeting alone, filled them with well-being, wholeness, and hope. It restored their faith, lit the flame of hope within them, and gave them the peace they needed in the turmoil they felt. Everything that Jesus had told them about has come true and they finally understood. Jesus knew they were ready, at peace, whole to go out and proclaim the Good News.

I think there are times I need that very essence of “shalom” in my life. It feels like I am missing something, where I don’t feel whole or not completely well. Upon reading these words, Jesus is speaking to that broken and in turmoil part of me. He is speaking to me, “Peace be with you. May you be well! I bless you with wholeness.” He knows the things I struggle with and the fragmentation of my life, yet He speaks to me, “Shalom. Peace be with you!” I am to take the same thing to others and breathe blessings upon them. To help and encourage others that may be struggling and going through a hard time. Who can I encourage today?

Thank you, Jesus, Lord of lords, King of kings, and for being the Prince of Peace. Thank you for speaking to me those very words you spoke to your disciples in the closed room.I praise you for restoring me and for granting me peace. Help me to remember this always. I love you and ask of this in Your Name, Jesus. Amen!
