Only In Christ is our Help

“You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as,”

— Colossians 2:20

“Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.”

— Colossians 2:22-23

Paul is saying that we cannot save ourselves with the wise sayings or self-help ideals of this world. Though taking action to flee from temptation and evil desires are important, Paul is saying in the end, “They provide NO help in conquering a person’s evil desires.” (Emphasis mine) We need the power of God and faith in the truth that we are free from the spiritual powers of the world, through Jesus’s death and resurrection. Without Jesus, we are trying to save ourselves by our own strength and abandoning what Christ has done for us.

Reflecting upon it, I can see that sheer will power only has gotten me through some situations, but only for me to end up messing up. Trusting in Christ’s power to get us through is a process. We need to surrender our desire to try to do everything on our own. Christ offers the power to save us and to break down strongholds the enemy sets up in our life. These are spiritual stronghold that need spiritual weapons and power. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 says, “For the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly but powerful through God for the tearing down of strongholds.[a] We are tearing down false arguments and every high-minded thing that exalts itself[b] against the knowledge of God. We are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Messiah—.”

  1. We need to begin to change our thought life by submitting our thoughts to Christ (2 Cor 10:5) and renewing our mind (Romans 12:2). we will be constantly bombarded by thoughts that will try to take our focus off of Christ and onto the world and its whims.
  2. We need to also seek forgiveness and repent. 1 John 1:9 Says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Thoughts we have are not the sin, but allowing them to change our heart toward acting upon them or intently lingering on them are. We need to be cleansing our mind and hearts through confessing that we need to be forgiven.

Lord Jesus, thank you so much for your sacrifice upon the cross that we are forgiven and made righteous. Thank you for offering your power to overcome and tear down strongholds in our life. I pray, surrendering my heart and mind to you, to ask for your cleansing and healing. Please tear down any stronghold in my life that you may see. I want to live a righteous life before you! I love you and ask of this in your name, Jesus. Amen!
