Eyes and Words of Jesus

‘When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”’

Luke 19:5 NLT

Jesus looked up and his gaze met with the eyes of Zacchaeus. What kind of eyes was Zacchaeus expecting? Judging by who he was, he most likely only was met with eyes of hate, scorn, and disgust. To everyone in his town, he was despised because he was the chief tax collector. Zacchaeus was probably expecting the same eyes that surrounded him daily. But, no. Today, Zacchaeus was met with eyes of mercy and genuine love. Jesus saw not Zacchaeus’ status or social standing. He saw not his past but His eyes were filled with forgiveness and joy for He had found what was lost!

He then sealed that with a sound that Zacchaeus longed to hear, his own name. Not said with scorn nor hatred, but a soul and heart-piercing love, “Zacchaeus!” What a most soothing and healing sound to hear, “Zacchaeus!”

We may never know what people are going through nor what troubles they may be facing. It is said In John 13:35, “By all this, all people will know that you are my disciples. if you have love for one another.” Jesus has set the example of how we should treat each other.

We must pray to have the eyes of Jesus that seek the lost. To look with love and mercy upon those that may be hurting and searching. We are to utter words that encourage and usher people to Christ. We need to pray to have our voice used as an instrument to heal and soothe the hearts of those that are weary.

Question to myself: How are my eyes and words today?

Heavenly Father, God Almighty, thank you so much for sending your Son to teach us how to love others. I ask for your forgiveness when my eyes or words were used to harm and brush others away. Please help me to have the eyes to see others how you see them. Help my words to be words that heal and soothe. I love you and ask of this in Your Name, Jesus! Amen!
