Scripture:
‘Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. ‘
Colossians 3:17 NASB
Observation:
Paul just finished telling the Colossians in Chapter 2 not to get wrapped up in the rules and “don’ts” that do not help with earthly indulgences. He encourages the Colossians and the readers to focus their efforts on doing and speaking in the name of Jesus. That by doing everything we do in Jesus, they will naturally be for His glory and in step with His Word and will. We will be focusing on doing things that will please God versus indulging in ourselves.
By trying not to do this or that, we are fighting a losing battle with sheer willpower. All kinds of things can go wrong, especially ending up feeling hopeless and defeated. Paul warns against this kind of action because we are trying to save ourselves by works and not relying upon Christ.
Application:
We are not to focus on works to save ourselves rather it is done to give glory to God. Instead of approaching something with “Don’t do this,” use “Does this glorify God if so, let my actions and words be done with thanksgiving to God, and not with regret.”
This is not easy, but it is renewing our actions that align with being renewed in Christ. I personally, need to remind myself, “Is the Lord being glorified by my actions or words?” Are my hands for the Lord? Are my eyes for the Lord? Are my hands for Jesus? These questions are important reminders to focus on doing for God, not “don’t do that or this.” Being a Christian is not about rules; it is about living a renewed life in Christ.
Prayer:
Dear God Almighty,
Thank you for your Word to us this morning. Thank you for what your Son has done for us so we can now be part of your family. I come before you in Jesus’ Name and ask for your guidance to do things that will glorify you. Help us to focus on serving you and doing things that will bring you glory! We love you and thank you! In Your Name, Jesus. Amen!
