Dig Deep and Draw Out

“For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’ But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.”
— Matthew 13:15-16

We live in an age where so many things are vying for our attention. Especially it seems when I set out to read the Bible, there are a number of things that try to distract me. There are announcements and alerts that hit my phone. Thoughts of the day play in the back of my mind as I read such that I find I have to reread sections I just read. Advertisements and even other people playing games or checking SNS avert my gaze from the Word. That is what the devil desires. Numb people to the things that really matter and flood them with entertainment and busyness. Make the Bible seem like a chore, something that is just something to check off the to-do list. No wonder we have grown dull to the things of God.

I felt the Holy Spirit caution me about growing dull. Where my responses are half-hearted, and my commitment to things of God is just enough to check things off. Nothing of God is dull and uninteresting, but it is how our attention is desensitized to things that do not shock us or have entertainment value that makes it seem that way.

Get out and experience stuff. When I was growing up, we were often told to go outside and play. One reason was to get me and my brother out of my parents’ hair. Another reason was for us to go out and experience the wonder and magic of life. Nowadays, I feel I spend many of days indoors in front of a screen. This is a call for me to really get outside and experience and discover how amazing our Heavenly Father is.

Not only that, I hear that I am to dig deeper into His Word to extract those gems of wisdom the Lord has implanted there. This will also require me to set up a space free of distractions and even resulting in me leaving my phone outside of the space and me reading the paperbound Bible.

Lord God Almighty,

Thank you for revealing Your Word to us. I pray that my eyes, ears, heart, and mind are open to each gem of wisdom you have for me. Help me to discover how deep and wide your love is. Help me to understand and also draw out the lessons you are teaching me. I choose to humble myself to seek you more! I love you and ask of this in your Name, Jesus. Amen!
