Scripture: “I do not accept glory from human beings, but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?” (John 5:41-44 NIV)
Observation: In this passage, Jesus addresses the religious leaders, pointing out their lack of genuine love for God. He highlights their tendency to seek approval and glory from one another rather than from God. Jesus contrasts His own mission, coming in His Father’s name, with the acceptance of others who come in their own name. This reveals a deeper issue of misplaced priorities and a failure to recognize and accept Jesus as the Messiah.
Application: This passage challenges me to examine my own heart and motivations. What glory am I living for? Am I seeking approval and glory from others, or am I seeking to honor and glorify God? Is my anxiety and restlessness due to seeking my own glory instead of resting in His glory? It reminds me to prioritize my relationship with God and to ensure that my actions and beliefs are rooted in His love and truth.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to seek Your glory and approval above all else. Fill my heart with Your love and guide me to live in a way that honors You. Help us as a church to give glory to You, especially in the upcoming Christmas service. Help us to become more like You: resting in Your Father’s love, not seeking our own glory but humbling ourselves and serving others as You did. May my actions reflect Your love and truth. Amen.
