Whom am I trying to please?

Scripture:

We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.” – 1 Thessalonians 2:4 (NIV)

Observation:
In this verse, Paul addresses the church in Thessalonica, emphasizing the importance of seeking to please God rather than people. Paul and his companions preach with sincerity, focusing on God’s approval, not human praise. Paul further elaborates in verse 6 that they are not looking for praise from people, even though they have the right to do so. Not getting the praise we think we deserve is one of the ways our hearts are tested.
Application:
Reflecting on both verses 4 and 6, I am reminded of the significance of my motives. In verse 4, Paul speaks about God testing our hearts, and in verse 6, he mentions not seeking praise from people despite having the right to do so. This challenges me to examine my own motives—am I acting to please God or to receive recognition from others? There are times when I might not receive the recognition or praise I feel I deserve, and this can be challenging. However, this is a test of my heart. God is more concerned with the sincerity and integrity behind my actions than with the accolades I receive from others.
In my daily life, I need to focus on pleasing God and not on gaining human approval. Whether at work, in my relationships, or in my personal pursuits, I should aim to honor God with my actions and intentions. By prioritizing God’s approval, I align myself with His purpose and plan, knowing that He sees my true motives and rewards faithfulness. This perspective helps me stay grounded and committed to doing what is right, even when human recognition is absent.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me to seek Your approval above all else. Help me to examine my heart and ensure my actions are motivated by a desire to please You. May my life reflect Your love and truth in everything I do. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
