Scripture
In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.
James 3:5 NIV
Observation
The scripture teaches us about how dangerous our tongue can be.
It is a very small part of our bodies, and for sure a very important one.
But in the end it is about how we communicate things. When we communicate, are we causing harm?
What comes out of our mouth is a reflection of what is inside of our hearts.
Jesus said:
“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”
Matthew 15:8 NIV
and later:
“It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.” “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you.”
Matthew 15:11,19,20 NIV
Application
Just trying to control the tongue does not bring a change. Because it is about what is inside our hearts.
To watch over what we speak or how we speak, helps us to analyze what actually is inside our hearts, and that is what needs to be changed.
If the changes comes from the inside, my tongue will speak what my heart is full of.
Prayer
Lord, help me to not only to control my tongue, but to change my heart, so whatever comes out of it will be a reflection of what is inside me. Help me to be a reflection of your love, you life, to the others around me. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
