Scripture
11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
> — Mark 13:11 NIV
Observation
Here Jesus is explaining about what we would see as the signs of the end of times and His second coming. Apart from the Eschatological point of views that we can interpreted this text, this verse called my attention.
That the Holy Spirit will give us, in the time of need, what to say, rather for defending our faith in apologetics, or to share the gospel to someone we meet, … He will speak through us, so we don’t have to worry about it.
Application
Every situation is different, and although it is essential to be ready to give an answer about our reason for the hope in Christ (as 1 Peter 3:15 mentions), more important than that is to rely on the Holy Spirit to speak the right words at the right time for every situations. He will guide us on how to do this with gentleness, respect, and clear conscience (1 Peter 3:16).
When we just rely on our knowledge and understanding, we might have answers, but those won’t touch people’s heart as the Holy Spirit does.
So:
– be always ready
– do not worry beforehand
– trust the Holy Spirit will speak through you
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that your Holy Spirit will speak through me to the lives of those around me. That I will be ready, but more than that, able to listen and follow your lead. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
