15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” John 2:15-17 NIV
Observation
Jesus is portrayed very differently than our image of a kind and gentle Jesus. Being 100% human and 100% God, He also exhibited anger and zeal for what is holy. He overturned the tables on our sin and shame to restore what we were created for, to give glory to God.
The issue was not the selling of wares and animals or the changing of money but the corruption and deceit perpetrated against those coming to worship the Lord.
Jesus’ example is a model for dealing with the sin that corrupts our hearts and minds. It helps us return to who we are in Him and refocus on God as the center of our lives. There are things in our lives that are necessary, and God is not telling us that they are of importance, but when those things begin to replace Him, is what He is warning us of.
Jesus loves us so much that He sometimes even turns the tables in our lives to draw our attention to the sin He desires to cleanse us of.
Application
We need to let God point out areas that need His healing and restoration. It is also essential for us to take Jesus’ example about sin in our lives. By confronting it and allowing Jesus to bring His grace and love to cover over and heal us, we will regain our purpose: to exalt and give glory to God. Jesus has zeal for His temple, and we are temples of Christ. He desires to clear out that junk in our lives so that we can be entirely free.
Like cleaning up before New Year’s, let us take the time to bring our sin and shame to Christ and allow Him to restore us and make us more like Him.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you for being our model of what is necessary to rid ourselves of sin. We know that it can’t be done on our own strength, but grant us Your forgiveness, grace, mercy, and salvation so that we can become more like You! Thank you for showing us strength when necessary. Thank you for understanding who we are and the struggles that we face. As we come to do cleaning in our homes, we open our hearts to You and ask that You clean out and repair anything that is not of You. We love you and ask of this in Your Name, Jesus. Amen!

観察
イエスは、私たちが抱く親切で優しいイエスのイメージとはまったく異なる姿で描かれている。100％人間であり、100％神であるイエスは、聖なるものに対する怒りと熱意を示された。神に栄光を帰すために、私たちが創造されたものを回復するために、私たちの罪と恥辱のテーブルをひっくり返されたのです。
問題は、品物や動物を売ったり、両替をしたりすることではなく、主を礼拝しに来た人々に対して行われた腐敗と欺きだった。
アプリケーション
私たちは、神の癒しと回復が必要な部分を指摘してもらう必要がある。また、私たちの人生における罪について、イエスの模範を示すことも不可欠である。罪と向き合い、イエスの恵みと愛が私たちを覆い、癒してくださるようにすることで、私たちは目的を取り戻すことができる。イエスはご自分の神殿に熱心であり、私たちはキリストの神殿である。私たちが完全に自由になれるように、私たちの人生のガラクタを一掃することを望んでおられる。
新年を迎える前に大掃除をするように、私たちの罪と恥をキリストのもとに持って行き、キリストが私たちを回復させ、私たちをキリストに似た者としてくださるよう、時間をかけましょう。
祈り
親愛なるイエス様、罪から解放されるために必要なことを私たちの模範としてくださりありがとうございます。私たちは自分の力ではそれができないことを知っていますが、あなたの赦し、恵み、あわれみ、救いを与えてください！必要な時に私たちに力を示してくださりありがとうございます。私たちがどのような人間で、どのような葛藤に直面しているかを理解してくださってありがとうございます。私たちが家の掃除をするとき、あなたに心を開き、あなたのものでないものを一掃し、修復してくださるようお願いします。私たちはあなたを愛し、イエスの御名によってお願いします。アーメン！
