Scripture: Nehemiah 3:2 – “And next to him the men of Jericho built. And next to them Zaccur the son of Imri built.”
Observation: Nehemiah 3 is a detailed account of the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls. The phrase “next to him” is repeated multiple times, emphasizing the collaborative effort of the people. Each person or group worked on a specific section of the wall, and their work was interconnected. This repetition highlights the unity and cooperation among the people, each contributing to the common goal of restoring their city.
Application: The phrase “next to him” serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community and teamwork in our lives. Just as the people of Jerusalem worked side by side to rebuild the wall, we too are called to work together in our communities, churches, and families. It is easy for me to feel that what the person does next to me, whether in church ministry or at work, is in competition with what I do. However, I need to repent of my pride and selfishness. Our individual efforts, when combined with those of others, can lead to significant accomplishments. This passage encourages me to support and encourage those around me, recognizing that we are stronger together.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for the example of unity and cooperation shown in Nehemiah 3. Help me to work together with those around me, supporting and encouraging each other in our endeavors. Forgive me for the times I have let pride and selfishness create a sense of competition. May I always remember that our combined efforts can achieve great things for Your glory. Amen.
