Let Not Familiarity Stop Us From Knowing God

“And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.”

— Mark 6:4 ESV

Observation:

Do we doubt because we think we know Jesus? Those who thought they knew all about Jesus because they saw him almost regularly as He lived in the same town couldn’t believe it was the same Jesus. They let their familiarity harden their hearts and minds. This very mindset and hardness of heart steal the opportunity to get to know Jesus for who He truly is.

Let not our familiarity with the Scriptures we read, things that happened or didn’t happen, harden our hearts to what Jesus wants to do in our lives. Let not the messages we hear fall upon ears that are deaf to what Jesus is speaking to us about. Let not our image of God harden our hearts so we cannot receive what He has for us because it is not how we expect God to answer.

Application:

I am reminded today that having a hardened heart stops me from getting to know God better. I may think I know Him, but I am far from the truth. Let my prayers be from a humble heart that says, “Let Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Let His Will, not mine, be done in my life. Let my reading of the Scriptures be always fresh and impactful to me, no matter how many times I may read them. I need to trust that the Lord can do more than anything I could imagine. I need to remember to be humble when I come before the throne of God.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, I approach Your Throne humbly and bow down in reverence to You alone. I ask for Your Forgiveness for the hardness of heart I may have. I ask that You reveal to me areas where my expectations of You, how You should answer or work in my life, block me from being surrendered and open to Your Will. I love you, and thank you for all you are doing! Praise and glory to you, now and forever! In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
