Scripture: Isaiah 66:2-3
“These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word. … they have chosen their own ways, and they delight in their abominations.”
Observation: In these two verses, Isaiah’s message is summarized. Isaiah contrasts two types of people: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and those who choose their own ways. The humble person is favored by God because they have a heart that is receptive to His word and guidance. On the other hand, those who are arrogant and follow their own desires are only performing external acts of compliance, which are not pleasing to God.
Application: Where am I choosing my own way? Where is my religious activity merely a cover-up to appear good? Isaiah challenges us to wholeheartedly follow the Lord. Only if I am open to God’s word and His guidance can I experience the peace and joy that come from Him.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to be humble. I want to live a life that is pleasing to You, not just through external actions, but with a genuine heart. Guide me in Your ways and help me to be receptive to Your word. Amen.
