Facing hardship with courage

**Scripture:**
“And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” (Acts 20:22-24, NIV)
Observation:
I am amazed at how Paul is willing to go to Jerusalem even though he expects hardship. But Paul feels that God is leading him into these hardships. This is completely different from how we mostly pray. We often ask the Lord to protect and shield us from hardship. But for Paul, hardship is part of running the race, part of taking up the cross of Jesus, and part of witnessing God’s victory. His attitude challenges our natural inclination to avoid difficulties and seek comfort.
Application:
Perspective on Challenges: Reflecting on Paul’s example, I need to reevaluate how I perceive challenges in my life. Instead of viewing them as something to be avoided or as a sign of the devil’s work, I should see them as part of my race, part of the journey God has set before me. Challenges and hardships can be opportunities for growth and for witnessing God’s power and grace in my life.
Embracing God’s Plan: Just as Paul was compelled by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, I need to be open to the Holy Spirit’s leading, even when it leads me into difficult situations. Trusting that God has a purpose for the hardships I face can help me embrace them with faith and resilience. I need to focus on finishing the race and completing the task God has given me, rather than seeking an easy path.
Faith and Courage: Paul’s courage in the face of impending hardships is a powerful example for me. I am called to have the same faith and courage, knowing that God is with me every step of the way. Rather than praying for a life free of challenges, I should pray for the strength and wisdom to navigate them, always keeping my eyes on the ultimate goal of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for the example of Paul and his willingness to follow your leading, even into hardship. Help me to see challenges not as obstacles to be avoided, but as opportunities to grow in faith and witness your power. Give me the courage and strength to embrace your plan for my life, trusting that you are with me every step of the way. May I remain focused on finishing the race and completing the task you have given me, testifying to the good news of your grace. Amen.
