Scripture (S)
Matthew 8:4: “See that you don’t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
Matthew 9:30: “See that no one knows about this.”
Observation (O)
In these passages, Jesus heals a man with leprosy and two blind men. After performing these miracles, He instructs them not to tell anyone about their healing. This directive might seem puzzling at first, but it highlights the concept of the “Messianic Secret.” Jesus wanted to manage the timing and nature of the revelation of His identity. By asking the healed individuals to remain silent, Jesus could avoid premature publicity that could hinder His mission. Additionally, His request to the healed leper to show himself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded demonstrates Jesus’ respect for the Mosaic Law and the importance of public testimony through prescribed rituals.
Application (A)
In our modern lives, especially with the pervasive influence of social media, we often feel the temptation to present ourselves and our achievements for validation and recognition. If I had the ability to perform miracles like Jesus, I certainly will rush to share these moments online. However, Jesus healed people out of compassion and obedience to God’s will, not for self-promotion. His deep connection with the Father allowed Him to wait for the right timing and act with humility.
Reflecting on these scriptures, I learn the importance of patience, discretion, and humility. Jesus wants me to act out of genuine love, compassion and obedience rather than seeking applause or approval. By maintaining a close relationship with God, I can learn to be obedient.
Prayer (P)
Dear Lord, thank you for your healing power and the miracles you work in our lives every day. Help me to trust your timing and be patient. Guide me to honor and acknowledge your blessings appropriately and with gratitude. Protect me from the temptation of seeking validation through self-promotion. May I always act out of love and compassion, following your example, and give testimony to your goodness in ways that bring glory to your name. Amen.
