Scripture (S): 1 John 3:14 (CSB) “We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.”
Observation (O):
- John’s words emphasize the profound connection between love and life.
- Loving fellow believers is not merely a sentiment; it serves as evidence of having transitioned from spiritual death to eternal life.
- Conversely, a lack of love keeps a person in a state of spiritual death.
- The context of 1 John 3 underscores the transformative power of Christ’s love in our lives.
Application (A):
Today, I am once again reminded of the depth of this truth: Love in action, not mere knowledge, serves as the litmus test for our spiritual condition. The commandment to love God and our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37–39) lies at the very core of all Scripture.
Jesus, in His radical teaching, expanded the definition of “neighbor” to include even our enemies (Luke 10:25–37). This expansive love can indeed feel overwhelming, yet it remains essential. It’s not enough to know about Jesus and His love; that knowledge must translate into compassionate action.
As we yield to the love of Jesus, it frees us from self-centeredness, fears, and selfish desires. In this transformation, we become equipped to genuinely love God and people. May our lives reflect His grace and love in tangible ways.
Prayer (P): Dear Lord, empower me to love as You do. Transform my heart, renew my mind, and guide my actions. May Your love flow through me to a hurting world. Amen.
