As Newborn Babies

“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:2-3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The only thing newborn babies needs is the breast milk. Nothing else. Not even water.

I have now 2 newborn babies nephews born less than 2 weeks ago. They actually born one day apart from each other. Although one is far away from me in Brazil, when calling my sister and the baby start to cry, the first thing she does is to get him to breast feed. Newborn babies crave for it. And if they don’t have it, they won’t stop crying for it. For them, it does not better if it is 3:00am. They will shout until parents come to them.

I heard that one thing we all need to watch out, specially pastors and missionaries is that we could be spending most of our time studying the Bible (acquiring knowledge about God), but totally forgetting to have time of devotion (allowing God to speak to us) and delighting in God’s presence. And I’m guilty of it too.

Going deep in theology is good as it makes our understanding deeper, but we cannot forget to crave for the pure spiritual milk which is God speaking straight to our lives through His Word. Not in a form of knowledge but change of heart. If the Word of God does not bring changes to our daily lives, the knowledge we possess about Him will do no good.

Some attitudes that helps to hear God’s voice speaking to our lives:

  1. Schedule a time for devotions and be consistent
  2. Open the heart, not to learn in knowledge but to allow God to change the heart
  3. Set a time for worship God. It can be through music or just delight a time to be in his presence.

Graciously Father, thank you for today. Five years ago, you present us with our beautiful daughter. Bless her years to come. Help her to grow as a person with a character that reflects you. Help us to be better parents to her as well. In your name, I pray.
