Unity in the Body

Scripture

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Ephesians 4:2-6

Observation

This chapter talks about the importance of unity in the Body of Christ, the Church.

One big weapon Satan has to use against the church is division. He wants to break our relationships and cause division. As Jesus pointed out in Matthew 12:25

“Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.”

That is why Paul asks us to make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit because we are one body, and when we get divided, we won’t stand a chance.

It is very likely that at some point there will be friction with one another. It is normal, as we are humans. But Paul teaches us once again to put off our old self, the corrupted way of live that once we had led by our own deceitful desires. To put our new self, with a new attitude and way of thinking.

He warns us about the words that come out of our mouth, we need to abandon falsehood and speaks truth to each other.

Application

To be able to stand as one body:

  • Our words must be words for edification and not division.
  • Our words must give grace to those who hear.
  • We must remove all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, slander, and all malice.
  • We need to be kind, compassionate, and forgiving.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I pray for our church, that all the things from our old self that may cause division between us to be removed. Renew our minds day after day, so we are more like you. May we speak the truth to each other and give grace. Help us to be kind and be able to forgive if any wrong is made to us. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
