Keep Watch

Scripture

“Then He came to the disciples and said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!’”

Matthew 26:45-46 NASB2020

Observation

Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Maybe the disciples had no idea of the events that would be happening in that night.

A little bit before the scripture above, Jesus got them sleeping as he prayed, and he told them:

“Keep watching and praying, so that you do not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Matthew 26:41 NASB2020

The word “watch” was used several times through this text, it literally means to guard against danger, abstain from sleep, to be vigilant.

Application

We never know when the storms in life will come. It can be a fresh and calm night like the disciples were having before suddenly everything turn into chaos.

Jesus tells us to be always ready, “keep watching and praying”. Even if there is no storms now, be on guard against dangerous and don’t cease to pray.

Prayer

Father, thank you for your love and care for my life. Thank you for your protection. Help me to keep always on guard and ready. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
